Anchorage (officially called the Municipality of Anchorage) is a unified home rule municipality in the southcentral part of the U.S. state of Alaska. With an estimated 300,950 residents in 2013, it is Alaska’s most populous city and contains more than 40 percent of the state’s total populaton. Altogether, the Anchorage metropolitan area, which combines Anchorage, Girdwood, Eagle River, Chugiak and Peters Creek with the neighboring Matanuska-Susitna Borough, had a population of 396,142 in 2013. Anchorage has been named an All-America City four times, in 1956, 1965, 1984–85, and 2002, by the National Civic League. It has also been named by Kiplinger as the most tax-friendly city in the United States.Anchorage is home to approximately 35,000 military men and women serving at the Joint Base Elmendorf/Richardson bases and includes the Air Force, Army, Air National Guard, Coast Guard and Navy. The Anchorage area has over 100 languages spoken here so has huge ethnic diversity making it a wonderful place to live and raise your family. There truly is something for everyone here! For the outdoors enthusiasts, we have bike trails that are maintained throughout the year and open up opportunities to bike, run, walk and cross country ski through town. The mountains surrounding Anchorage have beautiful hiking trails that offer berry picking and wildlife viewing throughout the seasons for the casual walker to technical climbs for the more experienced. Oceans, mountains, glaciers…we have it all!
